Training weight tires are the most versatile road tires. The category encompasses everything from, low priced commuter tires to ultra-durable all-season tires to fairly lightweight race/training tires. Training tires are designed for durability, with speed and ride quality as secondary considerations.
Many training tires utilize extra puncture protection layers. These layers can be made of Carbon, Nylon, Vectran, Kevlar or ceramic fibers. Regardless of material, puncture protection strips serve the same purpose, creating a rigid layer between the tire's casing and tread. Adding this layer increases a tire's weight and rolling resistance, using these space age materials minimizes that increase.
Training tires are most commonly made for 700c wheels and are 23-25mm wide. 650c training tires are available.
Training tires are made with either wire or folding bead. Folding bead tires utilize kevlar beads to hook into the rim, creating a tire that is lighter but more expensive than a wire bead tire.
