Lightweight tubes are commonly used by competitive riders and racers. Lightweight tubes (700x18-23 size) typically weigh around 70g, a standard weight tube usually weighs just over 100g. Lightweight tubes create a faster rolling wheel and livelier road feel, but are not as durable as standard weight tubes.
Made of butyl rubber, lightweight tubes can be patched using a standard patch kit. Because the rubber is so thin, the patch may create an imperfection felt while riding.
Lightweight tubes are only available with presta valves, which are measured in millimeters. Longer valves accomodate "deep dish" aerodynamic rims.
