Cyclocross is an interesting discipline of cycling that incorporates elements of road and MTB riding. The bikes used are essentially modified touring bikes with 700c wheels, though there are cyclocross style tires made to fit 26" MTB wheels. Cyclocross courses often incorporate road, dirt, grass and anything else the race organizer can throw in. Typically 30-35mm wide, cyclocross tires are wider than road but thinner than MTB. They have mud shedding knobs similar to MTB tires that vary for specific conditions.

Tubular tires are especially popular with cyclocross racers due to their ability to run at very low pressures. Some racers run cyclocross tires at pressures as low as 30psi. Comparable pressure in a clincher tire would almost certainly cause a pinch flat. Clincher tires are still quite common for training tires and with all but the highest level racers.

Cyclocross bikes are also becoming very popular with commuters and riders looking for a bit more versatility than a standard road bike. Standard road or touring tires are commonly used by riders with cyclocross bikes, but ride primarily on the road.
