Mountain bike (MTB) tires are designed primarily for off-road riding, and typically fit the 26" (ISO 559) standard, though 29" MTB tires are becoming more popular and fit on a 700c (ISO 622) rim. Tires have different tread patterns which suit various weather, trail conditions and riding styles.

Tread profile is the most important factor in determining the performance of a MTB tire. Low profile treads are designed for hard trails, street riding, short track racing and dry conditions. Medium profile treads are the most versatile and work well on everything from dry, packed trails to wet single track. High profile treads are designed for heavy mud and waterlogged trails, they tend to incur more rolling resistance in dry conditions.

MTB tires are available in various width, which usually correspond with tread profile. Low profile tires tend to run from 1.5-2" wide. Medium profile 1.75-2.25" wide. High profile tires run 2-2.5" wide. Many MTB riders run a wider tire in front for better grip and shock absorbtion.

MTB tires are run at low pressure compared to road tires. Most MTB tires have a max pressure of around 80psi, but are typically run at 30-50psi. Wider tires have lower psi ratings.
