Road race tires are designed to go fast. In the past, racers traditionally used glue on tubular tires. In recent years, clincher tires have become much more common on the bikes of racers at all levels. Clincher race tires tend to be manufacturers' flagship tires, they receive the most space on showroom floors and in glossy magazine ads.

Race tire quality used to be measured in tpi (threads per inch), a measurement of the quality of the casing. Modern race tires focus more on the rubber compound used. Many of today's fastest clincher tires have very low tpi counts and feature space age rubber compounds.

Most race tires are for 700c(ISO 622) wheels and are 20-25mm wide. 650c (ISO 571) wheels are sometimes found on triathlon and smaller road bikes, race tires for these bikes are available. Race tires are typically used with presta valve tubes.

With speed, light weight and grip as primary considerations, puncture protection and durability decrease. Race tires generally weigh about 200g and will last 1,000-1,500 miles depending on the rider and terrain. For those looking to maximize performance in races or fast group rides, race tires are the answer.

The GP4000 is one of the lightest and most durable road clinchers available. Ideal for racing, training or fast group rides.

Featuring a Vectran Puncture protection layer and either Active Silica rubber (colored versions) or Black Chili rubber compound (Black versions), the GP4000 is truly the cutting edge of bicycle tire technology.

Features:

  • Low rolling resistance
  • Light weight - 205g for a 700x23 tire
  • High puncture protection - featuring the Vectran puncture protection layer.
  • Higher mileage - Black Chili rubber compound provides durability as well as grip.
  • Anti-aging compound - Resistant to UV rays which cause tires to crack and wear prematurely.
  • Tire wear indicators - Two small dimples in the tread. When they're gone, it's time for a new tire.

Side wall failures
By Anonymous  from Walla Walla, WA  - Cycling Enthusiast

I purchased 3 of these Cont GP 4000 tires and all 3 of them had sudden side wall failures within the first 100 miles while riding on clean pavement. Two failures occurred with the tires on the front inflated to 100 psi and the rupture was a radial tear from the bead to the start of the treat. The 3rd failure occurred on the rear inflated to 115 psi and the tear was adjacent to and parallel with the bead. I was fortunately that these sudden blowouts did not cause a crash. 3 premature failures out of 3 is totally unacceptable and that represented $150 down the drain. These tires are known for their weak side walls, but I believe that these had to be from a particularly bad batch.
