BMX stands for Bicycle MotoCross - a form of cycling usually performed on small bicycles, typically with 20 inch tires. BMX was originally focused on multi-lap races on earthen, undulating tracks - very similar to motorcycle motocross. This remains a significant segment of the market, but BMX trick riding on the street and in scateboard parks has gained in popularity dramatically in recent years.
The requirements for tires in these various segments is obviously somewhat different. Dirt riding requires knobs on the tire to bite into the surface for adequate traction, while smooth surface riding (street, concrete or wood parks) is better performed using smoother tires so more rubber contacts the surface. Heavier riders and riders getting a lot of air will want tires with more air volume to reduce the risk of pinch flats.
