Mountain Bike Tires

Mountain Bike Tires come in two sizes- 26" and 29", the latter of the two being a recent addition to the market (since 2002) which is the same diameter as a road 700c tire. 29" tires however are made with mountain style riding in mind and are often much wider than road rims allow. 26" tires are considered the standard, but are not to be confused with other 26" tires for older schwinn and cruiser bikes. These are not the same size tire despite the term "26 inch". The best way to ensure your getting the correct tire is to use your ISO number and our ISO Chart.

Mountain bike tires work best when used under mountain conditions- on dirt, gravel, or anything "off-road". MTB tires utilize large knobs for grip and traction which are uneccesary on roads and can slow you down. If you have a mountain bike you'd like to use for road riding, Slick/Semi-slick Mountain bike tires are the best bet.

Within the MTB category of tire there are a few subcategories:

Cross-Country - These tires fall somewhere between a semi slick and a downhill tire. They are built for abuse on the trails.

Downhill/Freeride - Downhill tires are designed with downhill racing and freeride frames in mind- these are tires built for high speeds in the roughest of terrains.

Tubeless - Also known as UST tires, these tires are exactly what they sound like- MTB tires that don't require a tube. While there are many pros to UST's, it's important to get educated about them before diving in. You can read more about UST tires here.
