Bike Lights

Bicycle Lights are important for safe night riding and are often required by law depending on your location. Some states, like California, prohibit flashing lights on non-emergency vehicles. Before purchasing a light be sure to find out what kind of lighting is required or prohibited in your jurisdiction.

There are a myriad of lighting solutions for bikes these days but at BicycleTires we carry the lights that get you the most for your money.

LED Lights

LED, or Light Emitting Diode lamps are a low cost, long lasting lighting solution for your bike. LED's themselves last nearly indefinitely and run for several months on a few AA or AAA batteries. While LED technology is growing quickly, many LED lights have limited light output compared to halogens. This is determined not only by wattage or lumens but by direction. It is difficult to focus many LED's into one beam and therefore they often aren't as visible from as far away as halogens. However even these are generalizations because everything depends on the quality of the reflector.

Lower cost LED's work great for urban riding and commuting- they let you see and be seen. Many of our Planet Bike products work great for this purpose. The Planet Bike Blinky Superflash Tail Light is intensely bright and can be seen up to a mile away.

If your touring or riding under less predictable conditions, the brighter and bigger the light the better. It's reccomended as well that you have a light mounted to your handlebar as well as to your helmet so that you can see where the bike is going as well as where your looking. The Dinotte Lighting systems work well in both situations as the mounting system is flexible. The Dinotte lights are awesomely bright and well made lights that will last you quite a while.

Halogen Lights

Halogen lights are primarily for use by off-road/night riders/24 hr riders because of the intensity of their light is perfect for unpredictable terrain. Halogen's have gained popularity with urban and commuting riders, but be warned that in some jurisdictions they may be prohibited because they can be too bright and dazzle other vehicles at night. Halogens are very reliable and the lamps themselves do not last forever, they are readily available and replaced at a low cost. Halogens have a wider range of beam width and intensity than LED's as well.

The main downside with these lights are the batterys- often NiMH or NiCD batteries which can be heavy and have a lifespan of 500-1000 charges. When these batteries fail, they fail permanently.

Light & Motion makes some of the finest halogen lights on the market, and the Light & Motion Solo Light works great as a rugged commuter light or as a race backup.
