Tubeless Mountain Bike Tires
MTB tires that can be run without a tube carry the labels 'tubeless MTB' or UST. A UST set up requires compatible rims and tires. UST rims have deeper hooked sections which allow the more sturdy bead of a UST tire to engage with the rim and create an airtight seal. Liquid sealant is often used to ensure the seal and provide additional protection from punctures.
As with tubeless road tires, tubeless mountain tires can be run as standard tires with a tube. Tubeless wheels will accomodate standard MTB tire and tube set ups. Only tubeless specific on a tubeless rim will function without a tube. Installation can be a bit tricky, the first time around, but is not much more complicated than standard tire and tube installation.
Tubeless MTB tires are less susceptible to pinch flats than standard tire/tube setups. This allows them to be run at lower pressures which provides increased traction on wet or loose trails.
UST technology is best suited for wet or loose conditions, so most of the tires available feature mid to high profile treads.
