There are two standard valve types used for bicycle tubes. Schrader valves are the kind used for automobile tires and are commonly used on lower-priced department store bicycles, particularly in the US. Presta valves are used on higher-end bicycles and on most bicycles sold in Europe. Presta valves are also used on all tubular (sew-up) tires. They are lighter and more aerodynamic than Schrader valves. They are also narrower, allowing them to fit more easily inside the narrow rims used for road bikes.
Schrader valves are a little less fragile than Presta valves, but we recommend Presta valve tubes for most applications.
Presta valve tubes can be used as replacements for Schrader tubes since the valve stem is narrower and will fit through the larger rim hole required by Schrader valves. To reduce the risk of damage to the presta valve from the loose fit, we recommend using a Presta Stem Saver. This is a small sleeve that fits over the Presta valve providing a snug fit in the larger rim hole. |
